IWC Schaffhausen sets up a new boutique at Weinplatz 10, Zurich

This is the first thing you notice about the new Oyster Perpetuals, offered in three sunburst dial variants. The dark rhodium dial is the most conservative option (and we suspect the most popular), while the red grape and blue are bolder, more youthful options.

Naturally, there’s the applied Rolex crown and signed rehaut, but it’s the printed hour markers that we’re most interested by. In an uncharacteristically playful move from the Swiss giant, these are a breath of fresh, colourfully contrasting air. The rhodium dial gets bright blue details, the grape comes with reddish-orange highlights and the blue’s markers are Kawasaki-green (which looks to be the same tone as they used on the Deepsea D-Blue dial text). These 12 plots of colour, combined with the wonderfully reflective sunburst finish make for a surprisingly fun time-only replica watch.

Rolex have pulled off an impressive feat with this dial. It’s supremely simple, but far from boring. In fact, the purity of this dial – and the replica watch as a whole – may well be its greatest strength. No date or cyclops distract from the clean lines. The hands are simple sticks, and the applied gold indices have enough height to ensure legibility, without dominating. Only the hands and the three, six and nine are filled with luminous material – this isn’t a diver after all.

The broad brushed links of this comfortable steel bracelet are one of the many, instantly recognisable calling cards of Rolex, providing the perfect accompaniment to the case’s tapering lugs and mirror-finished bezel. Again, there’s nothing particularly new or innovative, but let’s be honest, at this point in the Oyster bracelet’s 80-odd years of life, there’s not too much you could improve on.

Rolex’s Oyster case is legendary, first developed in 1926 as the world’s first waterproof replica watch. 6 technical achievements that set Tudor apart

Over the past five years Tudor has transformed from a brand with a sprawling product offering and proposition into one that makes some of the best-looking, best-value Swiss timepieces around. A large part of this shift is due to the success of its on-point Heritage collection, which offered the perfect blend of modern quality and vintage style. Another less obvious, but equally important part of this equation is Tudor’s technical capacity as a replica watchmaker. It may not be immediately obvious, but its replica watches boast features and finish rarely seen at this price point.

Brushed bronze

Not only that, the patina will develop evenly, thanks to the finely brushed case finishing. These are small details, but details that take time to get right. The result is a bronze replica watch that’s finished to a level well beyond any other piece at a comparable price.

Bronze replica watches aren’t new, but Tudor’s take on the genre is typically meticulous, opting for an alloy that’s high in aluminium, which means it will develop a more subtle patina than many other bronze replica watches on the market.

Advanced alarms

While the MT-5621 was the brand’s first in-house movement, its first in-house module was developed way back in 2011, for the Heritage Advisor. Perhaps the most significant example of Tudor’s caseworking expertise is the mighty Pelagos. Surprisingly enough, one of the best features of the Pelagos is the clasp, which can be altered on the wrist thanks to its patented micro-adjustment system.

Superior straps

Anyone who owns a replica watch from Tudor’s Heritage collection won’t need to be sold on how impressive the fabric straps are, but it’s worth repeating. Hand-woven using traditional jacquard techniques, the technology might be centuries old and labour intensive, but boy does it result in a superior strap.

Tudor introduced its first in-house movement last year, the MT-5621 which showed up in the North Flag. With a strong three-day power reserve, silicon hairspring and COSC reliability it’s a big step up from ETA. Twelve months down the track and in-house movements are happily ticking away in the Pelagos and Black Bay collections.

Hands-on With the 2016 IWC Big Pilot Edition “Le Petit Prince”

When IWC released the original Big Pilot in 2002 it captured imaginations, marking a defining moment in the early noughties trend for ‘big’ replica watches. It was a brute, with its hulking 46mm case and utilitarian aesthetics. And if the original ref. 5002 Big Pilot had been as pared back as its WWII inspiration, would it have captured the hearts and minds of the replica watch-loving public quite as much as it did? This year, IWC revamped its entire Pilot’s collection, and today we’re taking a closer look at one of them: “Le Petit Prince” edition of the Big Pilot. IWC makes Little Prince versions of their Pilot’s replica watches across the board, and the defining features are a charming engraving of the young fictional royal on the caseback and a rich midnight blue dial.

The IWC Big Pilot was, without doubt a luxury pilot’s replica watch. It’s a post-modern statement piece that’s the horological equivalent of the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon.

This dial softens the Big Pilot, toning down the military aesthetic just a touch. The other notable design tweaks on this 2016 version are the welcome return of the number nine on the dial, balancing out the seven-day power reserve indicator on the right. The other update is the strap. Gone is the glossy alligator, in its place a supple calfskin made by Santoni. Not only is the calf a better stylistic fit for the replica watch, the quality of the strap is immediately evident.

Fourteen years after its release, the Big Pilot still possesses that almost visceral appeal that made it such a hit in the first place, and this 2016 Big Pilot Edition “Le Petit Prince” has all the elements to make it an ideal power replica watch.

Otherwise, it’s business as usual. The calibre 51111 is ticking away behind the scenes, with its vaunted Pellaton winding system and long power reserve. The well-finished case is the same, offering a nice mix of brushed and polished surfaces. This was my first time wearing a Big Pilot for any length of time, and I was surprised at how comfortable it was for such a large piece. The height (16mm) might be off-putting to some, but anyone genuinely in the market for a Big Pilot is unlikely to mind.

Review The Montblanc Homage to Nicolas Rieussec II Limited Edition

The story in a second:

This version of Montblanc’s distinctive Nicolas Rieussec collection has a nighttime party trick that’s worth staying up for.

The first Montblanc Rieussec emerged in 2010, and every subsequent model has followed the same essential formula, with dials and case materials receiving tweaks along the way. So, while the Homage to Nicolas Rieussec II isn’t a new piece (it was released in 2014), it’s worth a closer look.Omega Constellation Replica Watches

A nineteenth-century French replica watchmaker credited with inventing the chronograph, Nicolas Rieussec was an important man in the history of horology. For this reason, Montblanc decided to honour him with a series of – you guessed it – chronographs, inspired by his 1825 design. And you don’t need to have any great understanding of classical French replica watchmaking to appreciate the ample charms of this limited-edition piece

The dial

There’s a lot happening on the Rieussec II’s dial, in the best possible way, demanding attention and rewarding the eye. Every time you look there’s a new, equally fine detail to admire. First up, the base of the dial is silver, with a grained, eggshell finish. Upon this rest three subdials, the largest telling the time, while the smaller two are chronograph minutes and seconds counters respectively

Beyond all this, there’s another obvious omission – the hours – but this is where the Rieussec II reveals its party trick. The hour numerals are there – you just can’t see them in daylight. A luminous compound has, somewhat ingeniously, been mixed into the ceramic with enough precision that, upon turning out the lights, Roman numerals light up the dial. It’s a small, but very cool detail and a process unique to Montblanc.

. These white ceramic subdials sit above the dial, creating depth through shadow. Look again and you’ll notice two cutouts at each side of the dial. On the left is a day/night indicator (there’s an independently adjustable second time zone on the main dial), and on the right is the date. The uneven display of the date numerals detracts from an otherwise very balanced layout, so perhaps the replica watch would be better off without these large cutouts. The other design quirk I could do without is the clash of lumed sword-style hands for the time, and blued spade hands on the chronograph counters.

With everything happening on this dial – the textures, hands, numerals, and typefaces, as well as the apertures and unusual chronograph layout – it should be a visual mess. But somehow Montblanc pulls it off this difficult design, creating a beautiful and intriguing dial that works.

The case

A column wheel chronograph with a vertical clutch, the calibre MB R200 that powers the replica watch is a movement with interesting architecture thanks to the layout of the subdials. Developed specifically for the Riuessec collection, and is made entirely in-house, the The MB R200 is a movement Montblanc has used to great effect, versions of it showing up in the Heritage Chronometrie Exotourbillon Minute Chronograph, as well as the new TimeWalker Exotourbillon Minute Chronograph – though of course these replica watches throw in a tourbillon for good measure.

The Rieussec II is a sizeable beast. At 43mm across and 14mm high, it’s at the larger end of the scale for a highly polished chronograph. This size combined with the distinctive dial means you can be sure this replica watch will make a statement. And anyway – the height of the replica watch is justified, given that there’s an automatic chronograph movement ticking away in there.

Finishing is top-notch, with plenty of mirror-polished, curvaceous surfaces to keep you interested. Nor have any of the details been scrimped, the vaguely onion-shaped crown tapered for comfort, and inset with the Montblanc star. The single chronograph pusher is simple, but satisfying to use.

The movement

The strap

The slightly cushioned black alligator strap is a safe option, but an effective one as this is a dressy replica watch and needs to be treated with respect. That said, it would also look quite striking on a navy or dark green croc.

The verdict

The Rieussec II is comfortable on the wrist, and the sort of replica watch you’re unlikely to see on anyone else in the boardroom. For me though, the collection marks an important transitional point for Montblanc – a clear evolution from the TimeWalker and 4810 collections, with its superior movement and genuinely unique design. It’s a precursor to the Heritage Chronometrie and Spirit collections that are the brand’s main focus today. Though the Rieussec seems to have been lost in the shuffle, occupying a space between their complicated heritage pieces and their Villeret collections, I think it deserves a place in the sun, as a strong, original design that’s emblematic of Montblanc’s replica watchmaking.

Reviewing The Tissot T-Touch

Editor’s Note: Most days, Time+Tide is a pretty ordinary office job – emails, meetings, you know, the usual. But then there’s the one per cent of days that are far from normal. Last year Andrew had one of those days. It involved the Tissot T-Touch, helicopters, and a lot of pain….

Sure, we’re all about participation, about the replica watch in context, about real reviews on real wrists, ok great, bang, lock us in. What’s the worst thing that could happen?

A lot of bad things can happen when you’re running up one of Victoria’s highest mountains in competition with a group of guys – ex Hawthorn players Brad Sewell, Campbell Brown and Michael Osborne – who have all made very good livings, and netted a sizeable amount of Premiership silverware, from being in real pain, all the time.

It was one of those decisions you make on the spot, thinking that somehow, things will just work out for the best. It was made in a meeting with Tissot talking about the new T-Touch Solar: “Do you want to participate in this physical challenge launch with some other guys, probably ex-AFL footy players? It would be cool for Time+Tide to do more than just spectate….”

For the altimeter, which uses absolute atmospheric pressure to indicate the altitude, let’s have a group of guys run up a mountain, showing off the elevation gain function by having them measure their metres per minute. And then, for measuring the fearfully steep descent, let’s put them all on mountain bikes and ask for more readings. Oh, good.

For gauging the weather conditions (which was a bit of a no brainer, because it was a blue-bird day) let’s refer to the Meteo function, which gives a simple weather forecast – left of 12 is bad, right of 12 is good, wonderfully simple – measuring absolute and relative pressure in hectopascals.

The worst of all the options though, including vomiting, was to quit. This was just leg one of many. The pain was temporary, the ridicule would have been forever. But only if I pulled out. So don’t pull out, don’t pull out. A little glimpse inside my mind for the agonising duration of leg one.

The one who transported his replica watch back from the war in a very uncomfortable place. Once you’ve been through a battle with something on your wrist helping you, guiding you, jeering at you when your metres of elevation gain per minute begin to drop off, you get attached to it. It only takes a week of direct sunlight to power the T Touch for a whole year in the dark. It’s only been a couple of weeks since the day, but I’d already be good for a year – I’ve worn it far more than I expected.

The concept for the day was equal parts ambitious and inspired on Tissot’s behalf. Instead of just talking about the various functions on the world’s first fully solar powered touch screen replica watch, Team Tissot decided to get a group of ex-pro athletes (and Time+Tide) to try them all out against a backdrop of Australian natural oh-my-god-ness. Our chariot for the day would be a chopper. Of course.

For simple timing in the ocean and on the sand, let’s employ the chrono for a swim, a kayak and then see who wins the day in the winner takes all 50m dash. I won’t give anything away here, because the suspense must be killing you (we didn’t win, are you high?), but by then the only part of us that wasn’t shattered was the sapphire crystal faces of our replica watches.

You’ll see it all on the video, I recommend it for the simple reason that the music is brilliant and we used a drone to capture all the natural splendour. As a last, and slightly weird, point, I’d like to share that I understand that guy in Pulp Fiction better now.

Somehow it’s a fond memory.
