MY HIGHT QUALITY REPLICA WATCH STORY: Ted from Petrolicious and his Replica Rolex GMT Master 1675

So, when we began spotting the occasional timepiece dotted among the vintage BMWs and Porsches, we wanted to know more from this LA-based man of style – starting with this beautiful example of a Rolex GMT Master 1675.Editorial Director of Petrolicious, a site and production house dedicated to showcasing the world’s finest classic cars and their owners, Ted Gushue has an instagam feed (@TedGushue) that’s unsurprisingly dominated by breathtaking cars.

TedGushue6

What’s the story behind this hight quality replica watch?
He sold it when he bought the stainless Daytona, when that was released. I was always kind of heartbroken that the replica watch left our family, so in the back of my head I’d been looking for one. I have a really close relationship with my replica watch dealer, and when I told them the story, they went above and beyond to help me track down something that fit the place in our family’s history. My dad wore what could very well be this exact replica watch while he raised me, up until about age 14. It was an engagement gift from my mother – they’ve always been into timepieces as symbols of major life events.  In all honesty there’s no way for me to verify that this one is his replica watch, but it’s rare to find that kind of relationship with a dealer, when you happen to mention a story like that to them and they go to work in the background. I was really lucky to find that.

And where have you and your Rolex been together?
Everywhere I’ve been since I bought it in June 2015. It’s barely left my wrist. I wore it during the Monaco Historic Grand Prix, during the Mille Miglia, and to Wimbledon this year. It’s the most versatile replica watch ever made in my opinion. I will say however that I prefer not to get it wet. No reason to test the seal on something so special.

Ted at the wheel of a BMW 1600 Cabriolet from the BMW Museum

What does this replica watch say about who you are?
I’ve got a uniform that I generally wear every single day: navy blazer, button-down shirt, trousers, loafers and a GMT or a Submariner. My dad started that trend in our family – classic WASP vibes. Christ I sound obnoxious. But I don’t think I’ll ever be a Hublot guy, for instance. That aesthetic just isn’t me. It’s not in my nature.

So, tell us about your other replica watches.
They all have a story behind them that I’m proud of. The Submariner is from the year I was born, 1988. My Movado Datron was owned by a dear family friend who passed away. My Chopard Mille Miglia Chronograph was given to me by Chopard for competing in the Mille Miglia. But the GMT has the most powerful connection to where I’m from and where I’m headed.

We also spotted this interesting piece on your Insta feed.
That’s the Autodromo Group B Evoluzione, an incredibly designed replica watch that channels so much of what’s to love from the Group B era of racing. It’s designed by my pal Bradley Price in New York, with some of the machining work done by my friend Neil Ferrier.

Ted's Autodromo Group B Evoluzione

And if you could add something new to your collection tomorrow, what would it be?
I’m actually about to pull the trigger on a black-dialled 18k Rolex President. It’s just unreal. Such a classic look, and probably the only replica watch you could pull off in 18k gold without looking like a drug lord.

Do you think there are similarities between ‘car guys’ and ‘watch guys’?
Of course – they’re two sides of the same coin, just on a slightly different scale. How could you not be fascinated by a tiny engine on your wrist powered by the motion of your body if you’re a car guy? And how could you not be turned on by a 1960s Porsche if you’re a replica watch guy?

High Quality Replica Watch : Manga, irony and a suspiciously familiar dial

friday-Wind-down-5-8

It must also be said that the occasional call and response of Aussie Aussie Aussie, Oi Oi Oi! Has been known to burst forth in the office. For some reason we’ve been humming ‘The Girl from Ipanema’ this week and exhibiting a far greater than usual interest in the sports of fencing and field hockey (the Kookaburras beat the Irish 1-0 on Wednesday).Yep, we’re getting ready for the all-sprinting, all-dancing spectacle that is Rio 2016. But before we go full Olympic, let’s crack a refreshing beverage and have a look at the replica watches that caught our eye this week.

A Japanese One Piece

TAG-Heuer-one-piece-special-edition

But hands down the coolest collab we’ve seen from TAG Heuer yet is this Japan-only Aquaracer Phantom One Piece – a limited edition of 100 replica watches made to celebrate One Piece, the world’s longest running manga comic. TAG Heuer has been signing partnerships and sponsorships left, right and centre these days, with everything from DJs, to big wave surfers to commercial space flight on the table. We don’t know anything about those dudes on the dial, but that doesn’t stop us from wanting this replica watch. Desperately. Just look at that skull and crossbones on the bezel. Badass.

A blue German

Stowa-prodiver-blue

German replica watch brand Stowa is best-known for its popular pilot’s replica watches. But the brand also make a robust diver called the Prodiver, offered in some funky colourways (lime green and tangerine for example). Stowa has just announced a new, blue, limited edition with what appears to be a graduated blue dial that looks oddly familiar to the replica watch below. What do you think? Fair play or too close for comfort?

A Swiss Irony

Swatch-Sistem51-Irony-Sistem-Arrow-900x866

Everyone’s favourite entry-level auto (aside from the Seiko 5), got a metal makeover. The Sistem51, previously only an option in fantastic plastic, has been released (in many versions) as part of Swatch’s Irony collection. On particularly interesting option is this flieger-esque Sistem Arrow.

A complicated Italian

Panerai-PAM-670

Panerai were uncharacteristically quiet at SIHH this year, with a fairly small number of new releases. Turns out they were just saving their ammo. Panerai released a brace of new models at the ‘Dive into Time’ exhibition a few months back, and now they’re giving us (well, not exactly giving, this one has an RRP of $29,400) two new titanium equation of time models. And while EOT replica watches have been known to confuse and anger the Time+Tide team, there’s no denying that this guy, with its pretty blue face and big 47mm body, looks the business.

The week in numbers:

6: Replica Watches for six types of villain. Yet another reason to not trust someone with an Apple Replica Watch.

17: Passionate, conflicting and at times downright hilarious responses to the Air-King.

26: Brooding looks the rakishly handsome Chris Edwards gives in our Cartier Drive Man video.

3976: Views on Instagram Stories of the epic, and on-brand for the week, superhero battle between Andrew’s Batman and Andy’s Hulk.

5.5: Hours wasted tooling around with Instagram Stories in the office.

6 replica watches for all 6 types of super-villain, just in time for Suicide Squad

SuperVillains9

The Suicide Squad, in all their infamy

James Bond with Submariners (if you have a time machine handy, you can buy one of them here) then more recently the latest, and probably greatest, Seamaster 300. The Expendables with more PAMs than you could lift with one hand, and Arnie / Ari Gold with APs in Terminator 3 and Entourage. With Suicide Squad in cinemas (and trending poorly on Rotten Tomatoes)  we’ve got bad guys on the brain, and we can’t help noticing that when it comes to Hollywood, there are two distinct trends, the first noted by Empire: “If Marvel has the best superheroes, so the prevailing geek-logic goes, then DC has the coolest villains.” Meanwhile, the prevailing replica watch logic, as it applies to both, is that it’s the heroes who tend to get all the best replica watches.

“If Marvel has the best superheroes, so the prevailing geek-logic goes, then DC has the coolest villains.” Meanwhile, the prevailing replica watch logic, as it applies to both, is that it’s the heroes who tend to get all the best replica watches.

We couldn’t get them on wrists in time to save the first Suicide Squad by the looks of it, but hey, DC, you’re more than welcome to refer to it for the sequel. Our absolute pleasure.Well, here it is, the hero bias ends now. In the name of fairness, we’ve put together this compendium of villain types from across the spectrum and rewarded each with an appropriate timepiece from the baddest around.

The Mastermind

Silver tongued and sharply dressed, this particular brand of villain never gets his own (manicured) hands dirty. Sure, the law might know he’s shady, but they’ll never be able to prove it. He’s too smart for that, and knows how to maintain the required distance from the meat-puppets he orchestrates to do his bidding. Often seen rubbing shoulders with the media magnates and senators who live on his street, he’s partial to tuning out the noise of the great unwashed by playing Beethoven’s Overture to Egmont while in his Bentley.

He wears the… Jaeger-LeCoultre Grande Reverso Ultra thin Duoface – elegant, classic and yes, two-faced.

SuperVillain18

Jaeger-LeCoultre Grande Reverso Ultra thin Deface and Moriarty, played by Andrew Scott in Sherlock

SuperVillain1

The Henchman

Our second scoundrel has never knowingly made a decision himself, instead following orders from above. And, having sold his moral compass to a classmate back in kindergarten, has no qualms regarding his chosen career, provided he gets the job done. The majority of his wages goes on protein powder, which he buys by the pallet-load, though his growing cache of Jason Statham movies is illegally downloaded, and therefore doesn’t cost him anything. A routine MRI scan once found his entire frontal lobe had been replaced by muscle.

He wears the… Breitling Avenger Hurricane – huge and tough, with its trademark non-slip bezel that can be operated even while wearing gloves and a 24-hour display, because crime doesn’t stop at bedtime.

SuperVillain12

Breitling Avenger Hurricane and Rhino, played by Paul Giamatti in The Amazing Spider-Man 2

SuperVillain6

Evil Boy Genius

Part of the new wave of super-villain, EBG still lives with his parents, but then that’s unsurprising, since he’s only 14. Rarely leaving his bedroom, his lack of interpersonal skills makes eye contact his kryptonite, though of course that’s no problem when working remotely. Self-designed apps mean this enfant terrible can carry out his wicked intentions – hacking networks, launching missiles and causing general mayhem – from the comfort of his single bed, fuelled only by Coco Pops and Red Bull.

He wears the… Apple Replica Watch – allowing him world domination from his wrist, but only for as long as the charge lasts.

SuperVillain16

Apple Replica Watch and Lex Luthor, played by Jesse Eisenberg in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

SuperVillain4

The Anti-hero

As far from a mindless thug as it’s possible to be, everything the anti-hero does is for the greater good. Does he occasionally cross over to the dark side to get it done? Sure. If he were caught, would he be branded a criminal? Clearly. But still, someone has to take out the trash while the police are busy bungling their investigations. The key, then, is to fly under the radar. To blend in with the neighbourhood. That’s why he drives a Golf, works a regular 9-5 and has a wardrobe full of chinos and polo shirts. Nothing to see here.

He wears the… Vacheron Constantin Patrimony – slimline with no complications, this won’t attract attention, but rest assured it’s all going on behind the scenes.

SuperVillain11

Vacheron Constantin Patrimony and Dexter Morgan, played by Michael C. Hall in Dexter

SuperVillain8

The Monster

The living, breathing product of a harebrained science experiment, this creature has been around since the Industrial Revolution and shows no sign of popping his size 18 clogs any time soon. No one really knows where it lives (a cave? a cell?) or what it survives on (electricity? the spinal fluid of his victims?) – all you need to know is that you don’t want to cross its path on a dark and stormy night.

It wears the… Romain Jerome Steampunk Tourbillon Titanic – made up of gnarly, rusted components from a bygone era, conjoined and brought to life.

Romain Jerome Steampunk Tourbillon Titanic and The Mountain, played by Hafthor Bjornsson in Game of Thrones

SuperVillain5

The Femme Fatale

First up, there’s nothing stopping any of the above villains being female. Women can be as sneaky, corrupt, amoral and dangerous as the gents – and all hail equality on that front. This one, however, is just for the ladies. After all, sometimes the most powerful weapon is a fully functioning set of feminine wiles. Fiercely turned out from her precision bob right down to her spiked Louboutins, this seductress grew up replica watching Dynasty and isn’t afraid to use her charms to get what she wants. There is always an ulterior motive, so replica watch out for that dagger in her knickers.

She wears the… Roger Dubuis Velvet Haute Couture Passementerie – knowing she has the wherewithal to unravel its silk fishnet strap into a garrote wire at a moment’s notice.

Review of Raymond Weil’s Human Clock

After all, there is no better promotion than when people say nice things about you, rather than you having to say it yourself. There is no doubt that watch companies have embraced social media. “Likes” and “retweets” are often evidence of brand loyalty and Facebook and Twitter are a great way to keep content fresh and keep fans engaged.

The brand is inviting people to become fans of the brand and then “own” a minute of the day and tell the world why those minutes are important to them.Raymond Weil has launched a novel campaign on their Facebook page called, “The Human Clock.”

Other people’s reasons are…. er, less monumental. Like “knocking off time,” or, “because I think this is the COOLEST four digit combination possible for a time!”Already there is a strong response. Some people are choosing minutes based on significant, life-changing events.  One fan chose 10:49am saying, “that was the time my son was born.”

In order to own a minute of Raymond Weil’s Human Clock, you must have a Facebook account. Visit Raymond Weil’s Facebook page and “Like” it and then comment on their Wall, stating your time and your reason why you did. There’s no telling what they plan to do with the Human Clock once all the minutes are filled up. But it’s a neat concept and a great way to drum up 1,440 fans.

See below for some examples.

An Review About Citizen Promaster Navihawk GPS Watch

In this review of the Citizen Promaster Navihawk GPS timepiece, I will discuss what makes this product so impressive, why I like it, what it is not, and what the future might hold for truly useful watches of this kind.We are now in the era of the GPS watch – which is a segment that, in my opinion, defines the apex of traditional electronic watch technology.

Today, there is a healthy competition between the big three Japanese watch makers – Casio, Seiko, and Citizen – to each promote their own take on the modern GPS watch. It is difficult to consider how to talk about GPS watches once again, as we have been covering modern GPS-equipped timepieces for quite some time. While Citizen didn’t invent the GPS watch, it did arguably start the modern trend of “self-sufficient” GPS timepieces with the introduction of the Citizen Satellite Eco-Drive back in 2011.

While brands like Garmin have their own GPS watches, it is the Japanese who are leading the pack when it comes to modern self-sufficient GPS watches, in my opinion. Thus, many timepieces which have very short battery lives (smartwatches), or have other ergonomic or durability downsides, should not be included in this particular category of GPS watches. What is a modern GPS watch in this context? For me, a modern GPS watch is self-sufficient (self-charging battery, or a battery that lasts a long time), does not need to connect to a host device (like most smartwatches do), is durable (can be taken on adventures), and is able to offer a large amount of utility to the wearer.
Citizen-Promaster-Navihawk-GPS-aBlogtoWatch-41
Of course, the idea of a GPS watch is a beautiful thing. Evolving from watches which receive radio signals (where available) from stationary atomic clocks around the world, GPS watches receive signals from global positioning satellite arrays. These constantly beamed signals offer the time and calendar information, as well as location information (time zone). Thus, a modern GPS watch is able to either manually or automatically receive these signals so that the time on your wrist is perfectly accurate.

Mechanical watches are accurate to a few seconds a day, while traditional quartz movements are accurate to a few seconds per month. Combine a quartz movement with the ability to update itself with GPS signals, and you are talking about the ability to have perfect accuracy anywhere on the planet assuming you have line-of-sight to the sky. Moreover, Citizen’s Eco-Drive movements are light-powered. Citizen produces special Eco-Drive dials which allow light to enter through the dial to a photo-voltaic cell right underneath. The trick that Citizen is able to offer versus its competitors is a dial that allows light to enter, but does not look like anything but a traditional watch dial. In the context of the Citizen Promaster Navihawk GPS, what I like about it so much is that it feels like a traditional watch with the light-powered and GPS-equipped elements of the movement being more or less hidden or secret.

Inside of this Citizen Promaster Navihawk GPS watch is the Citizen-produced (we visited their impressive Japanese factories here) caliber F900 Eco-Drive movement. This GPS movement is still pretty new, and was originally introduced in the Citizen Eco-Drive Satellite Wave F900 watch. The Satellite Wave collection remains a design winner for Citizen, but is a lot less mainstream or traditional than designs like this Navihawk. Citizen is experimenting a lot with less “techie” designs seeing how easily it can make GPS watches fit within their more mainstream timepieces. There is also a more simple movement that doesn’t have all the features of the F900. That used to be the F100 movement, but is now the F150 movement, which you can find in watches such as the Citizen Satellite Wave World Time GPS watch (the nomenclature can get a bit confusing, I know). A major goal for the brand is to create smaller and smaller GPS-equipped watch movements, so that they can eventually start making women’s GPS watches as well. So with that said, while Citizen’s (and those from Seiko as well as Casio, for that matter) GPS watches aren’t small, they are perfectly wearable (and thin enough) given today’s size standards when it comes to men’s watches.

awk-GPS-aBlogtoWatch-20

The caliber F900 movement builds on an interface that Citizen has been working on for decades. The main dial offers the time, date, day of the week, and second time zone at a glance. Using the function selector and pushers, you have further access to a battery charge indicator, chronograph, alarm, and second time zone adjuster (world time). There is a slight learning curve to using all the movement’s features, but it really isn’t that bad.

An amazing and endearing irony in this super high-tech watch is the design integration of a rotating slide-rule bezel. This is part of the Navihawk collection heritage – which for a long time has existed as Citizen’s “professional” pilot and aviation watches. Most people think of dual analog/LCD screen displays when they consider many of the Navihawk watches that are on people’s wrists. The Citizen Promaster Navihawk GPS has a fully analog dial, which lends itself well to a classier, more timeless look that I appreciate.

Anyhow, rotating slide-rule bezels (made popular by the Breitling Navitimer collection) are an arguably handy but very archaic way of performing mathematical equations on your watch. In that link, you can learn more about how to use them. I personally never have, but these “tools” on watches more or less serve aesthetic versus utilitarian roles these days (even though you can technically still use it). The bezel has a smooth, but relatively secure rotating action.

Dial-wise, I like what the brand has done with the Citizen Promaster Navihawk GPS for the most part. Yes, the dial is busy, but purposefully so. Everything there is meant to do something, and for the most part, there are minimal decorative elements. Where there is dial decoration it is meant to prevent the watch from looking boring. Citizen has a nicely textured face and polished rings around the subdials. The hour markers are perhaps the most blingy element on the dial, but in a good way since the lume-topped, applied and faceted hour markers are both visually attractive and very legible. This is one of those busy dials that doesn’t make it hard to read the time.

I was lucky enough to be in Japan at Citizen while they were actually assembling these exact watches. Even though this is a “quartz” watch, how they are assembled is almost the exactly the same as a more expensive mechanical watch. The hands are applied by hand, and each dial is carefully inspected for damage or dirt resulting from the construction process – which, again, is mostly done by hand. These watches are lovingly made, and for Citizen represent the current apex of their “professional” Promaster watch collection.

The Commander II Datoday M016.430.16.061.22 has also some disadvantages. First, the piece lacks luminous features to make timekeeping in extremely low light conditions possible. Second, as an automatic replica watch, one has to wear this regularly to enjoy its precision or accuracy.

The Perfect Rolex Oyster Perpetual 39 Review

Editor’s Note: Since November last year the desktop on my computer has been one of Jason’s excellent pictures of this replica watch. I guess this goes a long way to explaining why I can’t get it out of my head. But there’s more to this Rolex than just its photogenic looks. I think these smaller, simple Oyster Perpetuals with their vibrant dials represent the pared back essence of a ‘good’ replica watch. No bells and whistles, just comfort, reliability and timeless style. findsalewatches

Well, allow us to humbly suggest that all you really need a replica watch to do, is tell the time. Everything else is superfluous. We’d also argue that you need a replica watch that can handle the daily rigours of regular wear and still scrub up OK. It also needs a timeless style that won’t look out of place on your wrist in 50 years’ time. Not an easy set of criteria, but the new Rolex Oyster Perpetual 39 more than nails it. If you could only ever have one replica watch, you could do a lot worse than one of these.

The Story in a second:

This could well be the only replica watch you’ll ever need.

Rolex-oyster-perpetual-39-JR-6

There’s a concept in the world of replica watch enthusiasts that’s referred to as ‘only one replica watch’. For the majority of the population, this concept is better known as ‘normality’. But if you’re the sort of person who has a replica watch for work, one for the weekend as well as a dedicated timepiece for special occasions, there’s a good chance the thought of committing to just one will fill you with dread. How could you choose? Can you live without a chronograph? And do you go for fine finishing or bulletproof reliability?

Rolex-oyster-perpetual-39-KD-9

The dial

This is the first thing you notice about the new Oyster Perpetuals, offered in three sunburst dial variants. The dark rhodium dial is the most conservative option (and we suspect the most popular), while the red grape and blue are bolder, more youthful options.

Rolex-oyster-perpetual-39-KD-8

Rolex-oyster-perpetual-39-KD-7

Naturally, there’s the applied Rolex crown and signed rehaut, but it’s the printed hour markers that we’re most interested by. In an uncharacteristically playful move from the Swiss giant, these are a breath of fresh, colourfully contrasting air. The rhodium dial gets bright blue details, the grape comes with reddish-orange highlights and the blue’s markers are Kawasaki-green (which looks to be the same tone as they used on the Deepsea D-Blue dial text). These 12 plots of colour, combined with the wonderfully reflective sunburst finish make for a surprisingly fun time-only replica watch.

Rolex have pulled off an impressive feat with this dial. It’s supremely simple, but far from boring. In fact, the purity of this dial – and the replica watch as a whole – may well be its greatest strength. No date or cyclops distract from the clean lines. The hands are simple sticks, and the applied gold indices have enough height to ensure legibility, without dominating. Only the hands and the three, six and nine are filled with luminous material – this isn’t a diver after all.

Rolex-oyster-perpetual-39-KD-10

The case

Rolex-oyster-perpetual-39-JR-5

This a paradox. It’s discreet while being distinctive, simultaneously timeless and on-trend. It’s also comfortable to a fault. It’s classic Rolex. Fastening the clasp, you know that every detail has been pained over, and that nothing about this replica watch has been left to chance. But more than that, you know you’re wearing the latest evolution of a replica watch that’s still very clearly related to its 80-year-old ancestor – a style of timepiece that for many is the canonical definition of a wristwatch. And that’s why the Rolex Oyster Perpetual is the best contender for the only replica watch you’ll ever need.

Previously available in 34mm and 36mm cases, this is also offered for the first time in 39mm. And while the two larger sizes are both quite unisex, the Oyster Perpetual 39 is a winning size for a men’s replica watch.

Rolex-oyster-perpetual-39-KD-11

The bracelet

Rolex-oyster-perpetual-39-JR-4

The Oyster case is part of a classic double act, working best when paired with the (equally timeless and iconic) Oyster bracelet. The broad brushed links of this comfortable steel bracelet are one of the many, instantly recognisable calling cards of Rolex, providing the perfect accompaniment to the case’s tapering lugs and mirror-finished bezel. Again, there’s nothing particularly new or innovative, but let’s be honest, at this point in the Oyster bracelet’s 80-odd years of life, there’s not too much you could improve on.

Rolex’s Oyster case is legendary, first developed in 1926 as the world’s first waterproof replica watch. And while these days many people are wary of going for a swim with anything rated less than 500m, the 100m water resistance on the Oyster case is more than enough for a casual dip. Meanwhile, aesthetically, it sits in the perfect middle ground between dressy and sporty, with a timeless style that means it will never look out of place. While there’s nothing novel about the style or construction of the case, what is new is the size.

Rolex-oyster-perpetual-39-KD-14

The movement

Powered by the proven Calibre 3132, this features Rolex’s Parachrom hairspring, the Paraflex shock protection system, and has around 48 hours or power reserve. It’s not Rolex’s most cutting edge movement, but then again it’s a perfectly appropriate choice for this entry-level, time-only piece

The knowledge

Talking point

I’ve got the perfect replica watch for EVERY occasion.

Who’s it for?

Anyone. This replica watch will look great on literally anyone.

What would we change.

While the look and design of this is as close to perfect as you can get, it would be nice to see the Oyster Perpetual powered by a more modern calibre.

Hands-on With the 2016 IWC Big Pilot Edition “Le Petit Prince”

IWC-Big-Pilot-Little-prince-slider

When IWC released the original Big Pilot in 2002 it captured imaginations, marking a defining moment in the early noughties trend for ‘big’ replica watches. It was a brute, with its hulking 46mm case and utilitarian aesthetics. And if the original ref. 5002 Big Pilot had been as pared back as its WWII inspiration, would it have captured the hearts and minds of the replica watch-loving public quite as much as it did? Probably not.Replica Roger Dubuis Watches

This year, IWC revamped its entire Pilot’s collection, and today we’re taking a closer look at one of them: “Le Petit Prince” edition of the Big Pilot. IWC makes Little Prince versions of their Pilot’s replica watches across the board, and the defining features are a charming engraving of the young fictional royal on the caseback and a rich midnight blue dial.

The IWC Big Pilot was, without doubt a luxury pilot’s replica watch. It’s a post-modern statement piece that’s the horological equivalent of the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon.

This dial softens the Big Pilot, toning down the military aesthetic just a touch. The other notable design tweaks on this 2016 version are the welcome return of the number nine on the dial, balancing out the seven-day power reserve indicator on the right. The other update is the strap. Gone is the glossy alligator, in its place a supple calfskin made by Santoni. Not only is the calf a better stylistic fit for the replica watch, the quality of the strap is immediately evident.

Fourteen years after its release, the Big Pilot still possesses that almost visceral appeal that made it such a hit in the first place, and this 2016 Big Pilot Edition “Le Petit Prince” has all the elements to make it an ideal power replica watch.

Otherwise, it’s business as usual. The calibre 51111 is ticking away behind the scenes, with its vaunted Pellaton winding system and long power reserve. The well-finished case is the same, offering a nice mix of brushed and polished surfaces. This was my first time wearing a Big Pilot for any length of time, and I was surprised at how comfortable it was for such a large piece. The height (16mm) might be off-putting to some, but anyone genuinely in the market for a Big Pilot is unlikely to mind.

Review The Montblanc Homage to Nicolas Rieussec II Limited Edition

The story in a second:

This version of Montblanc’s distinctive Nicolas Rieussec collection has a nighttime party trick that’s worth staying up for.

Montblanc-Rieussec-9.

The first Montblanc Rieussec emerged in 2010, and every subsequent model has followed the same essential formula, with dials and case materials receiving tweaks along the way. So, while the Homage to Nicolas Rieussec II isn’t a new piece (it was released in 2014), it’s worth a closer look.Omega Constellation Replica Watches

A nineteenth-century French replica watchmaker credited with inventing the chronograph, Nicolas Rieussec was an important man in the history of horology. For this reason, Montblanc decided to honour him with a series of – you guessed it – chronographs, inspired by his 1825 design. And you don’t need to have any great understanding of classical French replica watchmaking to appreciate the ample charms of this limited-edition piece

The dial

Montblanc-Rieussec-1

There’s a lot happening on the Rieussec II’s dial, in the best possible way, demanding attention and rewarding the eye. Every time you look there’s a new, equally fine detail to admire. First up, the base of the dial is silver, with a grained, eggshell finish. Upon this rest three subdials, the largest telling the time, while the smaller two are chronograph minutes and seconds counters respectively

Montblanc-Rieussec-8

Beyond all this, there’s another obvious omission – the hours – but this is where the Rieussec II reveals its party trick. The hour numerals are there – you just can’t see them in daylight. A luminous compound has, somewhat ingeniously, been mixed into the ceramic with enough precision that, upon turning out the lights, Roman numerals light up the dial. It’s a small, but very cool detail and a process unique to Montblanc.

. These white ceramic subdials sit above the dial, creating depth through shadow. Look again and you’ll notice two cutouts at each side of the dial. On the left is a day/night indicator (there’s an independently adjustable second time zone on the main dial), and on the right is the date. The uneven display of the date numerals detracts from an otherwise very balanced layout, so perhaps the replica watch would be better off without these large cutouts. The other design quirk I could do without is the clash of lumed sword-style hands for the time, and blued spade hands on the chronograph counters.

Montblanc-Rieussec-2

With everything happening on this dial – the textures, hands, numerals, and typefaces, as well as the apertures and unusual chronograph layout – it should be a visual mess. But somehow Montblanc pulls it off this difficult design, creating a beautiful and intriguing dial that works.

The case

Montblanc-Rieussec-11

A column wheel chronograph with a vertical clutch, the calibre MB R200 that powers the replica watch is a movement with interesting architecture thanks to the layout of the subdials. Developed specifically for the Riuessec collection, and is made entirely in-house, the The MB R200 is a movement Montblanc has used to great effect, versions of it showing up in the Heritage Chronometrie Exotourbillon Minute Chronograph, as well as the new TimeWalker Exotourbillon Minute Chronograph – though of course these replica watches throw in a tourbillon for good measure.

The Rieussec II is a sizeable beast. At 43mm across and 14mm high, it’s at the larger end of the scale for a highly polished chronograph. This size combined with the distinctive dial means you can be sure this replica watch will make a statement. And anyway – the height of the replica watch is justified, given that there’s an automatic chronograph movement ticking away in there.

Montblanc-Rieussec-12

Finishing is top-notch, with plenty of mirror-polished, curvaceous surfaces to keep you interested. Nor have any of the details been scrimped, the vaguely onion-shaped crown tapered for comfort, and inset with the Montblanc star. The single chronograph pusher is simple, but satisfying to use.

The movement

Montblanc-Rieussec-6

The strap

Montblanc-Rieussec-4

The slightly cushioned black alligator strap is a safe option, but an effective one as this is a dressy replica watch and needs to be treated with respect. That said, it would also look quite striking on a navy or dark green croc.

The verdict

Montblanc-Rieussec-3

The Rieussec II is comfortable on the wrist, and the sort of replica watch you’re unlikely to see on anyone else in the boardroom. For me though, the collection marks an important transitional point for Montblanc – a clear evolution from the TimeWalker and 4810 collections, with its superior movement and genuinely unique design. It’s a precursor to the Heritage Chronometrie and Spirit collections that are the brand’s main focus today. Though the Rieussec seems to have been lost in the shuffle, occupying a space between their complicated heritage pieces and their Villeret collections, I think it deserves a place in the sun, as a strong, original design that’s emblematic of Montblanc’s replica watchmaking.

The Montblanc Homage to Nicolas Rieussec II is a limited edition of 565 pieces and has an RRP of $15,130.

Reviewing The Tissot T-Touch

Editor’s Note: Most days, Time+Tide is a pretty ordinary office job – emails, meetings, you know, the usual. But then there’s the one per cent of days that are far from normal. Last year Andrew had one of those days. It involved the Tissot T-Touch, helicopters, and a lot of pain….

Tissot slider 3

Sure, we’re all about participation, about the replica watch in context, about real reviews on real wrists, ok great, bang, lock us in. What’s the worst thing that could happen?

The answer to that question hit me at precisely 10:35am on game day. Right at this point, pictured.

Struggletown

Struggletown, population: three. Sam Edmund from the Herald Sun leads, followed by Time+Tide and Campbell Brown

A lot of bad things can happen when you’re running up one of Victoria’s highest mountains in competition with a group of guys – ex Hawthorn players Brad Sewell, Campbell Brown and Michael Osborne – who have all made very good livings, and netted a sizeable amount of Premiership silverware, from being in real pain, all the time.

It was one of those decisions you make on the spot, thinking that somehow, things will just work out for the best. It was made in a meeting with Tissot talking about the new T-Touch Solar: “Do you want to participate in this physical challenge launch with some other guys, probably ex-AFL footy players? It would be cool for Time+Tide to do more than just spectate….”

For the altimeter, which uses absolute atmospheric pressure to indicate the altitude, let’s have a group of guys run up a mountain, showing off the elevation gain function by having them measure their metres per minute. And then, for measuring the fearfully steep descent, let’s put them all on mountain bikes and ask for more readings. Oh, good.

Mountain bike leg madness

Brad Sewell leads Michael Osborne in the mountain bike leg madness

For gauging the weather conditions (which was a bit of a no brainer, because it was a blue-bird day) let’s refer to the Meteo function, which gives a simple weather forecast – left of 12 is bad, right of 12 is good, wonderfully simple – measuring absolute and relative pressure in hectopascals.

The worst of all the options though, including vomiting, was to quit. This was just leg one of many. The pain was temporary, the ridicule would have been forever. But only if I pulled out. So don’t pull out, don’t pull out. A little glimpse inside my mind for the agonising duration of leg one.

The one who transported his replica watch back from the war in a very uncomfortable place. Once you’ve been through a battle with something on your wrist helping you, guiding you, jeering at you when your metres of elevation gain per minute begin to drop off, you get attached to it. It only takes a week of direct sunlight to power the T Touch for a whole year in the dark. It’s only been a couple of weeks since the day, but I’d already be good for a year – I’ve worn it far more than I expected.

The concept for the day was equal parts ambitious and inspired on Tissot’s behalf. Instead of just talking about the various functions on the world’s first fully solar powered touch screen replica watch, Team Tissot decided to get a group of ex-pro athletes (and Time+Tide) to try them all out against a backdrop of Australian natural oh-my-god-ness. Our chariot for the day would be a chopper. Of course.

For simple timing in the ocean and on the sand, let’s employ the chrono for a swim, a kayak and then see who wins the day in the winner takes all 50m dash. I won’t give anything away here, because the suspense must be killing you (we didn’t win, are you high?), but by then the only part of us that wasn’t shattered was the sapphire crystal faces of our replica watches.

Sneaking a look

Sneaking a look

You’ll see it all on the video, I recommend it for the simple reason that the music is brilliant and we used a drone to capture all the natural splendour. As a last, and slightly weird, point, I’d like to share that I understand that guy in Pulp Fiction better now.

Somehow it’s a fond memory.

Don’t ask me how that works.

Andrew

– A quick thank you to Director Marcus Flack and his crew from OK Yes for bringing this together in record time and for making it look like a Mountain Dew commercial. Mad skills.
